The Abuja Traffic Robbery Video That Went Viral Is Fake—CP

The video that has gone viral showing thieves allegedly assaulting drivers that halted at traffic lights in Abuja is fake, according to CP Ben Igweh, the commissioner of police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Fear and disinformation have been spread among FCT inhabitants through the deceptive film, which the CP raised worry about.

“Forensic analysis conducted by the Nigeria Police Force – National Cybercrime Centre has revealed startling findings regarding a video circulating purportedly depicting security concerns in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).” The statement was issued by SP Josephine Adeh, spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, and signed by the Police Commissioner.

“Contrary to initial impressions, the investigation confirms that the incident depicted occurred in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,” the police said, adding that a South African citizen shared the image on X (previously Twitter) on April 22nd, 2024. Carrying a firearm is not required for travel in Ethiopia, as incorrectly claimed in the video.

“It is extremely worrisome that people in the FCT have been led astray by this deceptive video.”
