PDP NEC North Central Set to Produce Ayu’s Replacement.

As preparations for the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on April 18, 2024 intensify, the party’s North Central Caucus has set in motion plans to present a candidate to complete the term of the zone, which was truncated after the former PDP national chairman, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, was removed from office by a court verdict.

Recall that the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) last week scheduled the Party’s NEC meeting on Thursday, April 18, 2024, following a National Caucus meeting on Wednesday, April 17.

Following the zoning of the PDP’s national chairperson to the North Central, the party’s national convention on October 31, 2021, elected Ayu, a former Senate President from Benue State, to fill the position.

Ayu was forced to resign down as chairman following a March 27, 2023 decision from the Benue State High Court prohibiting him from presenting himself as chairman.

According to the party’s constitution, deputy national chairman (North) Amb. Illiya Damagum of Yobe State, North East Nigeria, has served as interim national chairman since March 28, 2023.

However, there have been requests from many places, notably the North Central, for the Damagum-led NWC to conduct a NEC meeting to, among other things, hear the North Central’s candidacy and approve a substantive national chairman for the zone.
