On Saturday, the debut competition at the Acropolis Gardens and Residence Golf Course in Okija, Anambra State, was won by Francis Epe, the top golfer in Nigeria. Epe shot a spectacular sixty-two, twelve under par.

There were eighty-six amateur and professional golfers competing in the one-day tournament on the 42-hectare nine-hole course.

I was able to capitalize on my abilities because the course is well-designed. Epe attributed his bogey-free round to his self-motivation to steer clear of the numerous water hazards and sand traps. He also added that he chipped in twice during the round, resulting in a total of twelve birdies and six pars.

The winner’s record of twelve under par was four shots better than that of Python Golf Club’s Gift Willy, who took second place in the professional division with an eight under par score of 64. Chukwudi Okoro of Benin Golf Club finished third with a score of 67.

The women’s division was won by 36-handicap player Nkechi Nwaokolo, who shot 76 (nett) after 18 holes, defeating Rita Izojie, who shot 78 (nett), by two strokes. Third place went to Nkechi Musa-Tolani, who shot 79 (nett) after 18 holes.

According to Ernest Azudialu-Obiejesi, the golf course manager, the organizers of the competition aimed to reacquaint the globe with the historic Okija community.
