The vice president, Kashim Shettima, has paid tribute to Ogbonnaya Onu, who died on Thursday, praising his legacy as the former governor of Abia State and minister of science and technology.
The vice president’s sympathy statement praised Dr. Onu, calling him a “true statesman and accomplished Nigerian leader” whose influence on Nigeria’s politics and technology has been “immeasurable.”

While Shettima acknowledged the nation’s sorrow over the death of the great Nigerian leader, he reassured mourners that his legacy will serve as an inspiration for future leaders.
According to Shettima, Dr. Onu “laid a strong foundation for good governance and democratic principles – a legacy that would outlive him” while serving as the first civilian governor of Abia.

The VP went on to say that Onu’s “dedication to nation-building was evident in his focus on fostering scientific advancements and technological innovation, especially during the COVID-19 Pandemic” while he was minister of science and technology.

In addition to his impressive professional accomplishments, Shettima recalled Onu as “a man of integrity, wisdom and unwavering principles”—a genuine patriot who devoted his life to advancing Nigeria.

Shettima declared, “His contributions to Nigeria’s development will be forever remembered by the nation,” promising that Onu’s life and work will serve as an inspiration to Nigerian leaders of the future.
