Edo Guber Master Stroke for PDP—Fashanu, Omobayo’s Appointment

The selection of Engr. Omobayo Marvellous Godwins as deputy governor has been hailed by Chief Olu Fashanu, a famous indigene and Yamah of Okpe Kingdom, as a clever political move that will propel the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to triumph in the governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024.

Fashanu, a prominent PDP figure, made the observation that Omobayo’s appointment as deputy governor will enable Akoko-Edo to realize her full potential.

Contrary to expectations in some quarters that the governor would cede the position to the PDP legacy group, Governor Godwin Obaseki surprised many political observers on Monday by appointing Marvellous Omobayo, a former House of Representatives candidate for the Labour Party (LP), to the position of deputy governor in the 2023 National Assembly elections.

While expressing his happiness and confidence in the party’s ability to win the governorship race, Fashanu made it clear that the underprivileged people of Owan will also feel the same way.

According to him, the reasoning behind courting the LP/Obidient Movement in the local government area was straightforward: with the old and new PDP in Akoko-Edo still intact and supporting Dr. Asue Ighodalo, it was necessary to gain support from the area, which the All Progressives Congress (APC) narrowly defeated in the 2023 general election.

The second reason is that the Owan people, who are also marginalized in Afemai politics, will be simple to court when Akoko-Edo is recognized in this way. The Owan people are pleased with Omobayo’s selection because they already have a speaker for the House of Assembly.
